OB/Gyn Reflection

PDF of Reflection: OB Rotation Reflection

Overall, my OB/GYN rotation went well. The first week I was in the clinic. It was difficult to work with providers because there were many students on site, so I had to be proactive. I could not work with Professor Melendez in the clinic because no women would be in the room. Eventually, I could work with PA Bartholemew, who did most of the pelvic exams but allowed me to assist. She asked me general questions about screening and how to know if I’d found the cervix. Also, many providers did not like to have students with them, so it was discouraging, but if you keep searching for people to work with, you may find one.

The following week I was in Gyn and worked with PA Loiter. She allowed me to be more hands-on, doing breast exams and interviewing patients. We scrubbed into a tubal ligation with Dr. Jones, and he had me retract and suction. It was a great experience. I also spent time following up with patients postpartum and antepartum. During this time, I was able to build rapport with patients and comfort them during difficult times, especially if they did not have a support system.

Finally, OB was very stimulating. I saw four vaginal births, and Professor Melendez allowed me to close up a c-section with Dr. Warrock. I found myself very intrigued while in the OR, and I look forward to my surgery rotation in September.

Overall, I learned a lot and was prepared for my OB/GYN EOR exam.
